Wildlife encounters common in Milford Sound include dolphins as they play on the bow of your cruise boat, fur seals as they relax on the rocks and occasionally the timid Fiordland Crested Penguins can be seen.

Our Milford Sound Adventure day tour is a relaxed journey along the Milford Road, a historical and spectacular alpine drive from Lake Te Anau. We invite you to leave your vehicle in Te Anau and take advantage of the local knowledge and experience of our Te Milford Sound, New ZealandAnau based driver guides. Our frequent photo stops and short walks combined with a comprehensive commentary and cruise on Milford Sound will ensure your Milford Sound experience is a memorable adventure.

In Milford Sound we join a 2 hour Real Journeys Nature Cruise. There is lots of space inside and out to view and take photographs as well as complimentary tea and coffee during the cruise. You will see towering peaks, outcrops where seals and penguins may be seen, waterfalls of a range of sizes and volume depending on recent rainfall and, occasionally, the local bottle nosed dolphin pod will be sighted from the cruise.

Departing from Te Anau or Queenstown, these can be combined with a scenic flight into or out of Milford Sound (flights weather dependant).

Self Drive: Day Cruises

Some Important Notes for Self Driving to Milford Sound.

  • Driving time from Te Anau to Milford Sound – Allow 2.5 hours. If you plan on making stops please factor these into your drive time.
  • You need to be at the Visitors Terminal ready to board your cruise 20 minutes before departure.
  • From the carpark the visitors centre is a further 5 minute walk.
  • From Lake Gunn to Milford Sound is an Alpine Road: Great care should be taken, follow instructions on all road signage for your own safety.
  • Snow chains must be carried as instructed on road signage (Particularly April – November each year). Failure to obey these signs may result in a police fine.
  • Ensure you fill your petrol tank before departing Te Anau – it is a 242km round trip.

Kayaking

The most spectacular way to see Milford Sound is at water level in a sea kayak – Lonely Planet.

Edgewater Te Anau highly recommends that you pre-book kayaking in Fiordland – This can often be booked weeks ahead. Book with us and don’t miss out!

Fiordland Wilderness Experiences

Classic Kayaking – Milford Sound for the day. 4 -5 hrs on the water. Excellent day trip departing either from Te Anau or Milford Sound.
